(having been sober for a few years) was by my Rabbi. He called and asked if I would be willing to help a fellow congregate who was struggling with alcoholism. Over the course of the next eight years I was called upon many times to help others in this para-professional capacity. |
I was 50 years young and knew deep in my heart that I was supposed to be doing something else. Ten years sober from drugs and alcohol, and having helped many people connected to my synagogue, I made a life-changing decision. I decided to return to school to become a drug and alcohol counselor. MY FIRST POSITION as a counselor was at Bet T'Shuva, a 110 bed drug & alcohol in-patient rehab facility in Culver City, Ca. My personal sense of fulfillment in helping others infused me with the knowledge that this was my calling. Going to work was no longer a chore. After promotion to Mens Program Director I remained at this facility until the end of 2001. IN JANUARY OF 2002 I was offered the position of Primary Counselor at Promises West Los Angeles, a 18-bed in-patient private drug & alcohol treatment center. IN 2003 I WAS PROMOTED to Director of Aftercare at Promises Malibu (considered by many as one of the preeminent facilities in the country). Through this term I continued my education, first completing a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and then my MFT Masters Program. It was working under the excellent supervisor of the Clinical Director at Malibu, however, where I truly honed my skills. IN JANUARY OF 2007 I decided to devote myself exclusively to my growing private practice. It was difficult to leave my Promises family. I continue, however, to do one class a week on relapse prevention at that facility. In addition, other local relapse facilities seek my services, and as time allows I am more than happy to help, although my private clients always take precedence. I AM CURRENTLY SEEING CLIENTS in my private Brentwood, Ca. office, regarding all areas of addiction, including drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, food, shopping, online game playing...any activity that can become addictive.
